Fiberglass sinks are a popular choice nowadays. Many homemakers decide on getting fiberglass sinks due to its functionality, durability and relatively cheap price.
The main feature of the fiberglass material is its durability and resistance to extreme conditions. Fiberglass sinks are usually molded into kitchen or bathroom countertops to achieve a seamless look that is easy to clean. They also come in various shapes and sizes that are compatible with all styles of cabinetry and design. They are also able to withstand extreme temperatures so that running extremely cold or hot water on them will not pose a problem. The main problem with fiberglass sinks is that they do not do quite well when exposed to harsh substances and when washed with strong cleansers. They also tend to absorb and develop stain so that if not properly maintained, they can lose its gloss within a few years. However, if they are maintained properly, fiberglass sinks can be your best choice for a sink.
Maintaining Fiberglass Sinks
Always make sure that you are using non-abrasive cleaners for your glass sink. Mild cleaners such as dishwashing soap, liquid laundry detergent, or all purpose household cleaners are good enough for the job. Anything too abrasive will surely cause surface scratches and cause permanent undesirable damage to the sink.
First, apply the cleaner to the glass sink surface with a sponge or soft cloth (they should be non-abrasive or scouring), and rub it gently onto the surface. Afterwards, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water in order to remove all of the solution used for cleaning.
If your sink has been stained, try applying the above-mentioned cleaners and let it stand for an hour or two, then scrub the area and rinse afterwards. Heavy build-up of soap scums can also be a problem for fiberglass sinks, so in cases like this you can use very mild abrasive cleansers (read: very mild). However, do not use these kinds of cleansers often.
If you have hard water and mineral deposits have already formed, use cleansers that are specific for removing mineral deposits. Check the label and make sure that it is safe for fiberglass. Mineral deposit removers are usually based on mild acids, and are usually safe as long as they are used accordingly. Always use rubber gloves when using these.
Stains that are more difficult to remove such as oil paints, tar or adhesives take more effort to remove. You can use nail polish removers or pain thinners to take these stains out but be extra careful that you do not put in an amount that is more than needed, and never let the solvent go down into the drain if you have plastic fixtures installed in your plumbing. When dealing with solvents, make sure that you use your common sense and think twice before pouring anything.
Fiberglass is one of the most durable materials that are known now. Fiberglass stains then can last you decades, but the quality of the sink would depend highly on the care and the maintenance you put in.
